Documentation and application is the stage where internationally qualified nurses encounter the greatest challenges. What the NCNZ requires

All internationally qualified nurses must provide documents proving:

• Identity — notarised or certified colour copies of your passport and one other ID
• Current registration(s) held in the last 10 years
• Nursing qualification(s), which the NCNZ assesses for equivalency to New Zealand standards
• Evidence of English language proficiency (IELTS Academic or OET)
• 1,800 hours of post-registration nursing experience

All identity documents must be current at the date of application to TruMerit, and any document not in English must be accompanied by a certified translation.

The process, step by step

• Eligibility assessment to confirm your pathway
• Document identification, certification and preparation
• TruMerit (CGFNS) verification — create an account, select the CVS-NCNZ service, complete your profile, upload documents, and authorise your verification report
• Complete the two Welcome to Aotearoa New Zealand online courses
• Fitness to practise and criminal history checks (via Fit2Work)
• Apply to the NCNZ and, if required, complete a competence assessment
• Final registration and your Annual Practising Certificate (APC)

Common pitfalls that cause delays

• Name mismatches between your passport and other documents
• Documents that are not properly certified, notarised or translated
• Applying before meeting the 1,800-hour experience requirement
• English scores below the per-band minimums (7.0, with 6.5 in writing)
• TruMerit delays from late transcripts or broken seals
