NCNZ registration in 2026: a step-by-step checklist

Registering with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) is the gateway to practising as a nurse in Aotearoa. The process is detailed, but it is predictable — and the nurses who move fastest are the ones who prepare their evidence in the right order.

Before you start

Most delays happen because a single document is missing or formatted incorrectly. Get these ready first:

• A valid passport and proof of identity
• Your nursing qualification certificates and academic transcripts
• Evidence of registration in your home country, in good standing
• An approved English language test result (OET or IELTS)
• A detailed CV covering your full work history

The competency assessment

NCNZ assesses whether your education and experience are comparable to a New Zealand-qualified nurse. Depending on the outcome, you may be asked to complete a Competence Assessment Programme (CAP) at an approved provider. Plan for this possibility early so it does not catch you off guard.
