NCLEX vs KBA: choosing your competency exam
The two main competency routes compared — and how to pick the one that matches your strengths and destination.
Depending on your destination and pathway, you may need to demonstrate clinical competency through an exam. The two most common routes are the NCLEX-RN and a knowledge-based assessment (KBA) followed by an OSCE.
NCLEX-RN
A computer-adaptive exam that tests safe and effective clinical decision-making. It rewards strong fundamentals and lots of practice questions. Its adaptive nature means the difficulty adjusts to your performance.
KBA + OSCE
A knowledge-based written assessment paired with an Objective Structured Clinical Examination, where you demonstrate skills at practical stations. It suits nurses who perform well hands-on and under observation.
