OET vs IELTS for nurses: which should you take?

Both OET and IELTS are accepted for nursing registration in New Zealand and Australia, but they test English in very different ways. Choosing the right one for your strengths can save you a re-sit.

What is the difference?

IELTS is a general academic English test. OET (Occupational English Test) is healthcare-specific — its reading, writing, and speaking tasks are built around real clinical scenarios like writing a referral letter or speaking with a patient.

Which is easier for nurses?

Many nurses find OET more intuitive because the content mirrors their daily work. If you are comfortable in a clinical setting but find abstract academic essays harder, OET often plays to your strengths. If your general English is very strong, IELTS can be quicker to prepare for.
