From placement to PR: the realistic Australia timeline

Permanent residency in Australia is a marathon, not a sprint — but it is very achievable for nurses who plan their pathway from day one. Here is what a realistic timeline looks like.

Stage 1 — Registration & work visa

After AHPRA registration and securing a sponsored or skilled role, most nurses begin on a temporary work visa. This is your foundation: keep your registration current and your employment record clean.

Stage 2 — Building your points

Skilled migration is points-tested. Age, English ability, qualifications, and years of skilled employment all contribute. Small, deliberate choices — like improving an English score or completing a relevant qualification — can lift you over a threshold.

Stage 3 — Applying for PR

Once your points and experience align with a suitable visa subclass, you submit an Expression of Interest and, if invited, apply. For many nurses this lands within two to four years of arriving, depending on the pathway.
